#Emilymatters – Get involved!
#Emilymatters supports gender equality campaigns, including Emily Thornberry MP‘s important campaign for a statue of suffragette Emily Davison to be erected in the Houses of Parliament, No More Page 3, 5050Parliament as well as the work of organisations such as NAWO (National Alliance of Women’s Organisations).
Because Emily Davison campaigned for a more equal society, not just the vote.
The To Freedom’s Cause band of committed volunteers worked closely with Emily Thornberry’s team on an historic event (in support of her Emily Davison statue in Parliament campaign) that took place in the House of Commons on 13 February 2014.
Drawing on Emily Davison’s innovative use of media, To Freedom’s Cause playwright, Kate Willoughby created #Emilymatters as part of an extensive social media campaign in the weeks leading up to the event, which highlighted gender equality issues, including the importance of the statue campaign and promoted a debate about the continued relevance of the campaign for equality.
The event helped to boost the momentum of Emily Thornberry’s campaign and you can play a part in making it happen.
Why should I get involved?
What’s so important about a statue?
Who will see it anyway?
If you’re not sure why a statue of suffragette Emily Davison in the Houses of Parliament matters, listen to Emily Thornberry herself make the case:

Since the special House of Commons event there has been a fantastic response to the social media photos of support, which make a powerful and positive statement about gender equality issues today, whether it be the statue to commemorate Emily Davison and the women’s suffrage movement in Parliament or using your democratic right to vote, #Emilymatters.

We have come a long way since Emily Wilding Davison and her sister suffragettes first campaigned for women to have equal voting rights. However, there is still some way to go before we achieve true equality, so please lend your support to the Emily Davison Statue in Parliament campaign & other great causes, including #Emilymatters supporters No More Page 3 and 5050Parliament.
Let’s get a statue of Emily Davison into Parliament – because #Emilymatters!
Emily Davison’s legacy is for life, not just for 2013.
