Yet today only some voices are being heard in Westminster. Brexit is a feminist issue, as Saturday&#8217;s empowering <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/York4EU\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>York For Europe<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Women_4_Europe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Women For Europe&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> joint &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/calendar\/2019-03-09\/campaigners-calling-for-a-second-eu-referendum-march-through-york\/?fbclid=IwAR3N4q529dj9v2r3_GqKPt3NGv1Afc-tvaav0yL9iEZLxO1kHX_FUTOjfAI\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Remain &#8211; the Best Deal for Women&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> rally in York highlighted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a pleasure and a privilege to speak alongside York Central MP <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RachaelMaskell\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rachael Maskell<\/strong><\/a> and other activists including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LauraMunteanu83\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Laura Munteanu<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NinaParker\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Nina Parker<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BestForBritain\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Best for Britain<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CR_OBrien\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Professor Charlotte O&#8217;Brien<\/strong><\/a> (York Law School). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What became crystal clear, if it wasn&#8217;t already is that women&#8217;s voices are not being heard and that there is a direct link between the Ordinary, Brave and Extraordinary women campaigners of the past, like suffragette Emily Davison and campaigners today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #6fa78e;\">Feelings matter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If one thing has become increasingly clear over the past two and half years, is that feelings matter. As a creative, I call on everyone to bring their talents to the Cause. Listen with respect and speak from the heart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The power of story has been overlooked for far too long by those seeking to find a positive way through the current Brexit debacle in Westminster.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #6fa78e;\">Our voices matter. Our votes matter.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to step up and enable people to feel empowered, part of something much bigger than our individual selves.<\/p>\n<p>Grassroots groups and initiatives like Steve Bray and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SODEMAction\" target=\"_blank\">SODEM <\/a><\/strong>in Westminster and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ByDonkeys\" target=\"_blank\">Led by Donkeys<\/a><\/strong> are great examples of <strong>people power<\/strong> that cut through divisive headlines.<\/p>\n<p>We need more, much more of this positive work. The casual use of divisive and fear mongering language coupled with a second vote on the Prime Minister\u2019s leadership do nothing to encourage trust in our democratic process that women like <span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\"><strong>Emily Davison<\/strong><\/span> fought so hard to achieve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #6fa78e;\">Words AND Deeds\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/get-involved\/vote-100\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vote 100<\/strong><\/a> anniversary and Brexit, I wrote \u2018<span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\"><a style=\"color: #7d0b68;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2geSE8ZVjpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\">Coura<\/span>ge Calls for a People\u2019s Vote!<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u2019 that honours Emily and her brave suffrage sisters and joins the calls for a <strong>Public Vote on the Brexit deal<\/strong>. It highlights that now it is our turn to champion democracy and that time is pressing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe did not shrug our shoulders in the face of self-interest, misogyny and social injustice. We worked shoulder to shoulder, in solidarity, across borders and the oceans wide. Given that so much has changed since 2016, no one can now claim to speak for the \u2018Will of the People\u2019 today, so why not ask the people?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking part in the York rally also reminded of Manchester\u2019s\u2019 Mary Leigh, a loyal friend to suffragette Emily Davison. Decades after the equal suffrage had been secured, she wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTo the men and women of the Generations which will come after us.<br \/>\nYou will look back at us with astonishment. A battle for hearts and minds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoples-vote.uk\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net\/in\/sites\/1011\/meta_images\/original\/pv_logo.png?1523450013\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #6fa78e;\">Keep on!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all the setbacks and broken promises by Westminster, women like Mary, Emily and <a href=\"http:\/\/historysheroes.e2bn.org\/hero\/whowerethey\/3521\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sophia Duleep Singh<\/strong><\/a> never gave up hope. And nor should we.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We will not be bullied. Our voices will be heard!&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\"><strong>Emily Davison<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0\u00a0call to action speech from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\"><a style=\"color: #7d0b68;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/?page_id=244\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\">To Fr<\/span>eedom&#8217;s Cause<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0(by Kate Willoughby, 2015).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having written and performed a call to action speech by <strong><span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\">Emily Davison<\/span><\/strong>, drawn from her writings, at several of this year\u2019s Centenary suffrage events, I could no longer stand up \u00a0and say those words yet stay silent on such a significant democratic issue that I believe she would be campaigning for today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since taking \u2018<a style=\"color: #7d0b68;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/?page_id=244\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>To Freedom\u2019s Cause<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, my play about <span style=\"color: #7d0b68;\"><strong>Emily Davison<\/strong> <\/span>and her brave band of sister suffragettes from the north, to the House of Commons in February 2014, I have worked extensively with community groups and organisations promoting women\u2019s and young people\u2019s voices through drama and creativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the 2016 EU Referendum campaign and subsequent Brexit negotiations, <strong>women\u2019s voices have been sidelined<\/strong>, whilst around <strong>1.4 million young people have become eligible to vote<\/strong>.
