Lesley has been very supportive of \u00a0TO FREEDOM&#8217;S CAUSE and saw a performance of the play in June 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Herbert Jones was riding the horse that collided with Emily Wilding Davison in the Derby of 1913. He is also the hero of my novel, <i>The King\u2019s Jockey<\/i> and so I have a particular affection for him.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Herbert Jones was one of the most well-known and best-loved sportsmen in the country. He had been in the public eye since 1900 when, in a real \u2018rags to riches\u2019 tale, he was propelled to fame at a young age. \u201cThere is no more popular jockey on the Turf\u201d, said the <i>Daily Mirror<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_316\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Herbert_Jones_Lesley-Gray.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-316\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-316 \" title=\"Herbert Jones, the King's jockey\" alt=\"Herbert_Jones_Lesley Gray\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Herbert_Jones_Lesley-Gray.jpg\" width=\"274\" height=\"485\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Herbert Jones, the King&#8217;s jockey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Herbert\u2019s ability with horses was legendary and he could charm the most cantankerous of animals \u2013 it was said that Herbert \u201chad an almost mesmeric influence\u201d over them. With his horse-whispering skills, Herbert was bound to be a sensitive soul.
