We may cross over a well turned track<\/p>\n\n\n\n

touch new grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as it reinstates itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We may cross over a well turned track<\/p>\n\n\n\n

turn back a hundred years<\/p>\n\n\n\n

on Derby Day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

spot a young woman in her prime<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who was imprisoned, force fed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who spoke out, broke out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

shouted out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

who on that day slipped under the railings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into an incoming storm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of horses<\/p>\n\n\n\n

galloping round the curve<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into the long final straightness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A moment of history<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she braved it<\/p>\n\n\n\n

stood like a beacon \u2013 there for you and me<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with her iconic message<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Votes for Women\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

her last<\/p>\n\n\n\n

to a King who should have listened<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then she stumbled<\/p>\n\n\n\n

tumbled under his horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She never spoke again<\/p>\n\n\n\n

never smiled again<\/p>\n\n\n\n

never again smelt the freshness of rain<\/p>\n\n\n\n

nor heard the June birdsong<\/p>\n\n\n\n

outside her window at the Cottage Hospital<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a much maligned heroine of her time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a heroine of our time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a voice that lives on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a voice not just for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audrey Ardern-Jones<\/strong><\/a>‘ poem gives a quiet dignity to such a brave woman, who is still seen by some as an irrational fanatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I met Audrey at Bourne Hall’s ‘Dying for the Vote’<\/strong> exhibition in August 2013. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

V. Irene Cockroft<\/strong>, the curator, gave me a fascinating guided tour on the last day of the exhibition and Audrey happened to call in by chance. We had a long talk about Emily Davison<\/strong> and also Edith Cavell<\/strong>, two remarkable women who stayed true to their convictions in the face of brutal hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audrey kindly gave me permission to post ‘Tattenham Corner’ and today, the date of the 2014 Epsom Derby, seemed to be the right time to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
