They faced resistance, often brutal, from the government of the day, headed up by Asquith.<\/p>\n<p>Yet today, so many don&#8217;t bother to use their hard won democratic right to vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>No vote, no voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is why projects like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bitetheballot.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bite the Ballot<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>are so vital. They demonstrate that not voting puts you to the bottom of the pile when it comes to real progressive change.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s exactly why the suffragettes and suffragists fought so hard for the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be fooled by the old photographs the suffragettes&#8217; brave battle for the vote was just a first step. Their cause is just as relevant today and their work is far from over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWDinfographic2cited.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"EWDinfographic2cited\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWDinfographic2cited.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you think your vote doesn&#8217;t count, think again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Social media is a brilliant new way of campaigning and the suffragettes would have eagerly embraced it, but it won&#8217;t effect change alone.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s your vote in the <strong>Ballot Box<\/strong> that has the potential to make changes at the top &#8211; and better presentation of women in the UK and European Parliaments would be a start.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t expect things to change for the better anytime soon if you don&#8217;t use your right to vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/To-Freedoms-Cause_large_only_figure.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"cause2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/To-Freedoms-Cause_large_only_figure.jpg\" width=\"137\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In February, I took my Emily Davison play, <a title=\"2009-2014:  Background Information\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/?page_id=804\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>To Freedom\u2019s Cause<\/strong><\/a>, to the House of Commons, a place that jealously guards drama to itself.
