With the European elections (#EP2014) fast approaching, Herbert Asquith the notorious anti suffragist Prime Minister looks on.<br \/>Photo: K Willoughby, 2014<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Suffragette <strong>E<\/strong><strong>mily Davison<\/strong> campaigned for an equal society and faced resistance, often brutal, from anti suffragists, most notably headed up by <strong>Herbert Asquith<\/strong> and <strong>Lloyd George<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<b>\u201cEmily Wilding Davison was a great campaigning feminist. Her struggle continues and she remains an icon for women even over a century after her death.\u201d<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b>&#8211; Emily Thornberry MP, founder of the<br \/>\nEmily Davison Statue in Parliament Campaign<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, lots of progress has been made since the suffragettes first stood up to a staunchly chauvinist Establishment, but look around you and you&#8217;ll see we&#8217;ve not come that far in 100 years, for example, only <strong>23% of UK MPs are women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD-infographic-1-mk3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1166 aligncenter\" alt=\"EWD infographic 1 mk3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD-infographic-1-mk3.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD-infographic-1-mk3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD-infographic-1-mk3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD-infographic-1-mk3-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In February, I took my Emily Davison play, <a title=\"2009-2014:  Background Information\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/?page_id=804\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>To Freedom&#8217;s Cause<\/strong><\/a>, to the House of Commons, a place that jealously guards drama to itself. This highly successful event included a lively and informative debate chaired by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b007qlvb\/presenters\/jane-garvey\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jane Garvey<\/strong><\/a> (BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Woman&#8217;s Hour Presenter) and helped to boost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emilythornberry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Emily Thornberry MP&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> important campaign for a statue of Emily Davison to be erected in Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1984\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HoC-photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1984\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1984   \" alt=\"HoC photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HoC-photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J-1024x289.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HoC-photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J-1024x289.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HoC-photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J-300x84.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HoC-photostream_debate_General_ML_EWD_Feb2014_J.jpg 2007w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">#Emilymatters event included a performance of &#8216;To Freedom&#8217;s Cause&#8217; &amp; a debate chaired by<br \/>Jane Garvey with Chi Onwurah MP, Dr Helen Pankhurst, Yas Necati &amp; Emma Barnett.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As part of this historic event, I created <strong>#Emilymatters<\/strong>, an initiative to help support the great work carried out by fourth wave feminist campaigns for gender equality, including <strong>Lucy Holmes<\/strong>&#8216; <a href=\"http:\/\/nomorepage3.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>No More Page 3<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.5050parliament.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>5050 Parliament<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/everydaysexism.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Everyday Sexism Project<\/strong><\/a> and the newly formed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Go-Girls-Wales\/481751915215327\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Go Girls Wales<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK&#8217;s <strong>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/boys-club-britain-is-more-sexist-than-italy-azerbaijan-and-india-says-un-human-rights-expert-9262615.html\" target=\"_blank\">boys&#8217; club sexist culture<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0is proving very difficult to shift, which means it&#8217;s doubly important to keep pushing for what is right and (let&#8217;s get down to brass tacks) economically beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Closing gender gaps benefits countries as a whole, not just women and girls<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Ana Revenga and Sudhir Shetty, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/fandd\/2012\/03\/revenga.htm\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Empowering Women Is Smart Economics&#8217;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since first researching <strong>To Freedom&#8217;s Cause<\/strong>, it became apparent that suffragettes&#8217; bravery and inventive use of media still rankles in some quarters and that things really haven&#8217;t changed all that much.
