It would have been possible to hold the event in a larger room in Portcullis House, just across the road from the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p>However, it felt right that the play and the debate, chaired by <strong>Jane Garvey<\/strong> (BBC Radio Four Woman&#8217;s Hour presenter), should take place in the same building where Emily Davison made her audacious 1911 Census Night protest occupation of the House of Commons that the late\u00a0<strong>Tony Benn<\/strong>\u00a0commemorated with a plaque in the cupboard where she hid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD_TonyBenn_HoP_plaque.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1806 aligncenter\" alt=\"EWD_TonyBenn_HoP_plaque\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD_TonyBenn_HoP_plaque.jpg\" width=\"221\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD_TonyBenn_HoP_plaque.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/EWD_TonyBenn_HoP_plaque-150x300.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a BBC Radio Four interview, Faye Ward, the producer of the feature film, <strong>Suffragette<\/strong>, outlined why taking the story to the place where the women protested matters so much:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">The real suffragettes did walk these corridors and fight in these corridors to get the vote,\u00a0so it feels incredibly poignant that we&#8217;re here telling their story in the same place that they were.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Faye Ward, Producer, Suffragette<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emily Wilding Davison and her sister suffragettes would be shocked by the UK&#8217;s dearth of women in Westminster and in boardrooms across the land. As a result the UK lies 58th in an international league of parliamentary female representation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">A hundred years on from the epic battle of the suffragettes, the centre of our democracy,<br \/>\nthe institution that frames our modern laws and moulds them to meet the needs of the age,<br \/>\nfeels, in terms of equality, the most backward place of all.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Lucy Fisher, Emily Wilding Davison biographer &amp; Political reporter at<br \/>\nThe Observer,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2014\/apr\/13\/westminster-problem-women-equality-maria-miller\" target=\"_blank\">Does Westminster have a problem with women?<\/a>&#8216; article<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last week the Government reduced the number of women still further to just 3, leaving 90% of the cabinet made up of white men with substantial financial means. the campaign for equality &#8211; <em>still worth fighting for?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>that focused on Emily Wilding Davison&#8217;s legacy today.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Jane Garvey (BBC Radio Four Woman&#8217;s Hour presenter) with\u00a0<b>Dr Helen<\/b>\u00a0<b>Pankhurst<\/b>\u00a0(Great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst),\u00a0<b>Chi Onwurah MP<\/b>\u00a0(Shadow Cabinet Office Minister &amp;
