She was a leading figure in the campaign for women to get the vote but she also fought for social justice and gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>I created <b>#Emilymatters<\/b> as part of the social media campaign to promote the Emily Davison statue in Parliament campaign event in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#8216;<strong>To Freedom&#8217;s Cause&#8217; &#8211; House of Commons performance &#8211; Micro Trailer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_qgxQ4Elq4g?rel=0\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2018To Freedom\u2019s Cause\u2019<\/strong> by Kate Willoughby \u2013 historic performance in the House of Commons.<br \/>\nCast: Eleanor Dennison, Fiona Geddes, Darren Godbold, Kyra Willaims &amp; Kate Willoughby.<br \/>\nDirector: Brian Astbury | Musical Director: Rhona Finch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The evening was a great success and as a result of the fantastic response online to Emily Davison&#8217;s story<b>, #Emilymatters<\/b> continues to promote issues that mattered to her. Photos, tweets and posts have been sent in from across the globe in support of gender equality and using the right to vote.<\/p>\n<p>With the next <strong>UK general elections<\/strong> taking place in May 2015, there are some exciting developments in the pipeline for <b>#Emilymatters<\/b>. Why people choose to vote\/not vote is something I&#8217;m very interested to explore in order to encourage greater participation at elections.<\/p>\n<p>Like \u2018<b>To Freedom\u2019s Cause<\/b>\u2019, <b>#Emilymatters<\/b> draws on the past, but is very much about the present and the future. Gender equality is a right for all women and girls across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><i>TO FREEDOM\u2019S CAUSE should be seen by every woman and teenage girl.<br \/>\nAnd by anyone who couldn\u2019t be bothered to vote. Moving, stirring &amp; passionate.<br \/>\n<\/i><b>&#8211;\u00a0 Jane Garvey, BBC Radio 4, Woman\u2019s Hour presenter<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emily Davison&#8217;s story is not the only one to highlight what a precious thing the right to vote is and why <strong>#Emilymatters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Votes-For-Women_RADA_Photo_VBurgess_2011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"To Freedoms Cause_Votes for Women\" alt=\"Votes For Women_RADA_Photo_VBurgess_2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Votes-For-Women_RADA_Photo_VBurgess_2011.jpg\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Votes for Women: Sabina Arthur &amp; Katie Russell, To Freedom\u2019s Cause cast members, RADA<br \/>Photo: Val Burgess, 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s photos of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/afghandemocracy.org\/news\/category\/gains-of-afghan-women\/page\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\">Afghan women<\/a><\/strong> risking their lives to use their right to vote were a reminder of what we owe the women&#8217;s suffrage movement and how precious our democratic rights are.<\/p>\n<p>Only last month Libya lost <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2014\/06\/26\/libya-tribute-salwa-bughaighis\">Salwa Bughaighis<\/a><\/b>, one of the country\u2019s bravest advocates for human rights and gender equality. I am ashamed to admit that I had never heard of her before reports of her assassination appeared on my Twitter timeline.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>She was the first woman to call for a democratic Libya &#8230; She was calling for equal citizenship in Libya and inclusive democracy &#8230; She said &#8216;We have to struggle inside Libya to the last moment. They will not threaten us and shut us all up.&#8217; <\/strong><strong>And she was calling everybody to the last moment &#8216;Please participate and protect the ballot&#8217;.<\/strong><br \/>\nZahra&#8217; Langhi\u00a0 &#8211; Libyan Human Rights activist &amp; friend of Salwa Bughaighis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reading about her refusal to give in to extremist threats and then hearing <strong>Zahra&#8217; Langhi<\/strong> moving tribute to her friend on the BBC\u2019s World Service reiterated the extraordinary bravery of women campaigners across the Middle East today. I believe that their work is very much a part of Emily Davison&#8217;s legacy.<\/p>\n<p>As Zahra&#8217; Langhi spoke of returning to Libya to finish what her friend Salwa Bughaighis statrted, her comments echoed Mary Leigh&#8217;s tributes to her sister suffragette, Emily Davison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>&#8216;She was an inspiring, loving, positive, hopeful woman. She was an icon for all Libyan women. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A beautiful and at the same time, powerful women. The icon of the revolution.<\/strong>&#8216;<br \/>\n&#8211; Zahra&#8217; Langhi, Libyan Human Rights activist &amp; friend of Salwa Bughaighis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was very fortunate to meet <b>Hillary Rodham Clinton<\/b>, on her recent book tour to the UK. She could well become the USA\u2019s first woman President. I\u2019ve heard her speak about empowering women and girls around the world and was heartened by her interest in what the 2015 <b>#Emilymatters<\/b> Votes project aims to do with, with regards to encouraging young women, in particular, to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Although a prolific writer herself, Emily Davison was fed up of politicians\u2019 warm words and no action. She championed the <b>Deeds Not Words<\/b> approach, so it is great to see the Clinton Foundation\u2019s <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clintonfoundation.org\/our-work\/no-ceilings-full-participation-project\">No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project<\/a><\/b> is working hard to advance rights and opportunities for women and girls around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Votes_For_Women_poster.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Votes_For_Women_poster\" src=\"http:\/\/www.katewilloughby.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Votes_For_Women_poster.jpg\" width=\"315\" height=\"463\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, in the UK voter turnout has continued to decline. In 2010 only <strong>39%<\/strong> of young women aged 18 to 24 chose to vote<b>. #Emilymatters<\/b> aims to challenge that head on and is looking to work with partners to make a positive difference. Things have to change if real progress towards gender equality and better representation is to be realised.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>\u201cWe haven\u2019t got power anyway, so voting won\u2019t make much difference \u2026<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I kind of see the political thing as a game. I don\u2019t take it seriously.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Nadi, final year student &amp; potential first time voter at the 2015 UK general elections<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nadi is not alone in his views on voting.
